As a mum of two, I class a few items as total parent essentials. An accurate, easy-to-use and reliable baby thermometer is one of them.

I’ve tried everything from old-school, basic oral thermometers to fancy forehead scanners, and some have certainly impressed me more than others. So, when I heard about the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer, my interest was immediately piqued.

Is it really as user-friendly and precise as it promises? And what about its fancy features, like the age-based fever alert and colour-coded screen?

Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer: The Women’s Health verdict

The Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer’s biggest selling point is that you can select a specific age setting and get a precise reading. The digital screen will then light up green, yellow or red to show whether your baby or child’s temperature is in the normal, fever or high-fever range. Clever, hey?

You can use the thermometer to take an oral, underarm or rectal temperature. I found it very accurate, offering the same reading numerous times in a row. It’s super lightweight and compact, so it’s easy to chuck in your baby changing bag or pack in your suitcase for family holidays. Plus, it’s quite the bargain at around £15.

In my opinion, what lets it down a little is how loud the reading alert is — not ideal when trying to take a stealth, middle-of-the-night temperature while your baby sleeps in their crib or cot. In those instances, a no-touch forehead thermometer with a mute button might be a better bet.

Overall, I rate the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer as an affordable yet high-spec and versatile thermometer for children of all ages.

How I tested the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer

I used the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer throughout the cold and flu season, regularly checking the temperature of my two school-age children as well as friends’ babies and toddlers. For full transparency, I tested the thermometer in oral and underarm mode and gave the rectal readings a swerve for review.

Alongside whether I felt this stick thermometer offered value for money, I focused on the following:

Ease of use

Nobody wants to dig out the instructions when trying to take the temperature of a crying baby. I need a thermometer that’s straightforward and intuitive to use.

During testing, I evaluated how simple it was to use the thermometer to take oral and underarm temperatures at various times of day. I checked for a backlit screen for nighttime readings and sleek, minimal buttons to avoid any faff.

Ease of temperature reading

A large screen with a digital display makes it easy to read the temperature result. Since you’ll likely be using your thermometer day and night, a thermometer that lights up is particularly handy — especially if it’s colour-coded.

Speed of temperature reading

How quickly a reading is displayed is an important factor when choosing a thermometer. Some forehead or in-ear thermometers take just a second, while underarm or oral stick thermometers take a little longer. When using the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer, I timed each reading to see how it performed.

Ways to take a temperature

Some parents prefer the accuracy of an underarm thermometer, while others like the no-touch convenience of a forehead thermometer. I looked at the different modes available on this Braun model to rate for versatility.

Key features of the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer

Here are some of the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer’s features that I love:

Age Precision™ Technology

Age Precision™ is one of Braun’s unique selling propositions — and functionality I adored during testing. You simply select the appropriate age range — 0-3 months, 3-36 months or 36 months+ — to get an accurate age-related fever alert. The fever threshold differs for newborns, children and adults, and the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer automatically considers this when displaying your reading. No more second-guessing what your little one’s temperature means!

A quick heads up: This clever tech is optimised for underarm temperature taking.

Colour-coded readings

Another standout is the colour-coded readings. The display lights up in green, yellow and red, so you can instantly see if your baby or child’s temperature is in a safe range based on the colour alone — without even looking at the actual reading.

Flexible tip

Babies and kids are inevitably wriggly (ever tried keeping them steady during a nappy change?). So I love that this thermometer’s tip is soft and bendy — perfect for keeping comfortably in place while attempting to take the temperature of a squirming bub.

I also like that the tip isn’t cold to the touch like so many metal thermometer tips are. This helps prevent sudden shock, which can make an already wiggly child even trickier to keep still.

Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer review

Setting up the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer was a snap. It was ready to use straight out of the box, and although the instruction booklet was worryingly chunky, the step-by-step process was concise. Once I had a quick flick through, I felt confident I wouldn’t have to refer to the instructions again.

Now, let’s dig into the specifics.

Ease of use

I found the thermometer incredibly easy to use. There are only two buttons to press: the on button and the large Age Precision™ on the front of the thermometer. You just press the larger button to select the age range before taking a temperature.

It is a bit annoying that the display isn’t backlit when selecting the age range, so I suggest doing that before taking a temperature — particularly in a dark room.

When using the thermometer in underarm mode, I found it easy to tuck it under my baby and toddler testers’ armpits and cuddle them close while waiting for the reading results. With my older children, I tested the thermometer in oral mode. Both were happy to keep it in their mouths for the time needed. No muss, no fuss with any of my testers.

I tried it, too, and it felt a lot more comfortable than the rigid stick thermometers of my ‘80s youth.

Ease of temperature reading

To me, this is where the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer shines. The reading is displayed in large, clear digits on the screen. You can easily read it even when your attention is being pulled in a hundred directions (which I know mine often is).

But the best bit is that the screen lights up in green, yellow or red, so you can see immediately whether your baby, child or you have a raised temperature. Genius.

The thermometer also stores the last temperature reading, displayed when you turn it on the next time you use it. It’s a handy addition, but I felt it would have been more beneficial if I could click through multiple saved readings.

Speed of temperature reading

On the whole, the thermometer offers a relatively speedy reading. OK, so it’ll never compare with an infrared forehead thermometer that can give a reading in just one second. But after various tests taking underarm and oral temperatures in my baby and toddler testers, my children and myself, I found the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer gives accurate readings in nine seconds on average.

Sometimes, I got reading results in as little as five seconds, while other readings took as long as 16. I’d classify this as a ‘could do better’ but not frustratingly long wait.

Ways to take a temperature

This thermometer certainly ticks the versatility box: You can use it to take temperatures orally, under the arm or rectally. Under the arm is recommended for babies and toddlers, while older children who can safely keep the thermometer in their mouth can use the oral mode.

Additionally, I appreciate that the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer doesn’t require you to do anything different when switching between modes. That said, I recommend cleaning the thermometer thoroughly with soap and warm water and then leaving to air dry between each use.

What other thermometers could you consider?

If a stick thermometer isn’t for you, the Braun ThermoScan 7 is a fantastic alternative to the Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer. It offers the same Age Precision™ technology but as an easy-to-use in-ear thermometer instead. I rate its ExacTemp Stability indicator, which lights up to let you know you’ve positioned the thermometer correctly, and the protective case is a handy addition. Naturally, all this tech comes at a price, but it’s a worthwhile investment if your budget allows.

Alternatively, the Elera Thermometer is a fantastic does-it-all in-ear and forehead thermometer at an affordable price. It features parent-friendly functions like a mute button and an easy-to-read light-up screen, which is why I consider it a great piece of kit to have in your parenting arsenal.

What is the age range for the Braun Age Precision Digital Thermometer?

The thermometer is suitable for use from birth as an underarm or rectal thermometer. You can use it orally once your child is old enough to sit safely with the thermometer in their mouth. This is the most convenient way for adults to use it, too.

The Age Precision™ technology is split into three age groups: 0-3 months, 3-36 months and 36 months+.

What batteries does the Braun Age Precision Digital Thermometer take?

The Braun Age Precision™ Digital Thermometer comes with a CR1632 lithium coin battery included and installed.

The battery symbol flashes on the display when it needs changing. The battery door is designed to prevent children from getting inside. Insert a coin into the slot, then rotate it to open and close.

Can you use the Braun Age Precision Digital Thermometer on adults?

Absolutely. There’s no upper age limit for use, and it’s perfect for the whole family. Before taking an adult’s temperature, just ensure the age setting is 36 months+.
